As much as it is indeed troubling, I don't see how such a small portion of society can "really" make a dent in social stability? You mention 30% of Republicans are on board with this lunacy. Since roughly 50% of the USA is GOP-leaning, it means at most 30% of 50%, hence 15% of the population may be open to such crazyness. Not insignificant, but not enough for any significant impact.
